URBAN BEACH 10

10 – Venice, ITALY

After a day spent canal-crossing and negotiating the narrow streets of this fine watery Italian city, ditch wrestling with the tourist throngs, and escape to the peace and quiet and the golden sands of the Venice Lido. The island that stretches between open sea and lagoon is only 10 minutes away from St Mark’s Square and it is hailed by many as one of the best seaside resorts of the whole upper Adriatic.

URBAN BEACH 9

09 – Sydney, AUSTRALIA

Sydney is a city blessed with more spectacular beaches than most towns have impressive buildings. One of the best walks in the world has to be the coastal path from Bondi to Bronte, where you’ll see surfers sharing the waves with dolphins. For a more exclusive scene, head to one of the harbour beaches (as opposed to one of the ocean beaches with crashing waves) in the Eastern Suburbs – Redleaf Pool in Double Bay is a secret spot with its own floating pontoon to swim out to. Nearby Nielsen Park is also a favourite with those who won’t dignify any old plot with their beach towel. Newport and Avalon beaches are a three-quarter-of-an-hour drive over the bridge north of Sydney centre – stunning setting (and surfers)

URBAN BEACH 8

08 – Palma, SPAIN

For sand, sea and sexy Balearic sounds Purobeach on Pagell (+34 971 744 744; www.purobeach.com) is a winner. And, if you’re a guest at Puro Hotel, you’re entitled to use the free shuttle bus service from the hotel to this seaside shindig. Situated just outside Palma, Mallorca’s fabulous first city, the Virtual Beach Club at 60 Paseo de lletas (www.virtualclub.es) is another fun-filled option for seaside frolics. By day, you’ll find a cool crowd lazing on hammocks listening to chill out tunes as the surf rolls in at their feet. Have a massage on the house or at sunset, kick back with a cocktail before the cave-club fires up later on.

URBAN BEACH 7

07 – Amsterdam, HOLLAND

Over the summer months, there are a number of sun-scorched beaches open to the public across Amsterdam, such as Blijburg aan Zee on the new IJburg Island complex, where bands or DJs provide a beach-party atmosphere every Sunday evening. Probably the most popular beach in the city is Amsterdam Plage, but venture a little further out of town (30 km: a 20-minute train journey) and you’ll find the in-the-know coastal resort of Bloemendaal, the ‘Ibiza of the North Sea’. We suggest you head for Republiek Beach Club (www.republiek.tv; pictured) on the beachfront.

URBAN BEACH 6

06 – Miami, USA

If you can prise yourself from the white sands a stroll from hotels such as the Setai, and should you fancy a hefty side order of beefcake with your steroid-enhanced serving of Cobb salad, then plant yourself at one of the many cafés that line art-deco-enriched Ocean Drive in Miami’s South Beach. Year-round sultry heat and humidity is matched by the heat generated by the look-at-me eye candy that struts past, making this pumped-up paradise strip one of the most extraordinary beaches in the world when it comes to grade-A people watching.

URBAN BEACH 5

05 – London, UK

Shoreditch is still arguably London’s hippest neighbourhood (after all, Soho House has just opened up a branch here, complete with a fabulous rooftop pool: Shoreditch House), and the City Beach Club (www.citybeachclub.co.uk) at Truman Brewery, E1, is one of the most inspiring hubs for alternative cultural goings-on. Come summer, it is now also home to a giant sandpit for adults to play in with lashings of music, drinks and food as well as imported palm trees. City boys and girls also come to this sand-in-the-city spot to cool off in their lunch breaks and feel the Jamaican sand between their toes.

URBAN BEACH 4

04 – Barcelona, SPAIN

Barcelona set the standard by which every modern city in search of a beach-front makeover would like to be measured when it created a brand-new swath of sand on the Med, Barceloneta, for the Olympics in 1992. Today it bristles with flashy restaurants, jumping bars and a shimmering Franky Gehry-designed fish, no less.
A little too on the stag-and-hen circuit by night, unless you’re lucky enough to have nabbed a table at the chic Agua (pictured) on Pg Marítim de la Barceloneta (+34 93 225 12 72; www.aguadeltragaluz.com) but by day, this coast-hugging stretch may not have the softest sand, but it is definitely the best place to grab some rays if you’re in the mood for some tanning.

URBAN BEACH 3

03 – Los Angeles, USA

California is no slouch when it comes to postcard-perfect sea-and-be-seen hangouts, and LA is the star of the show. Bohemian Venice Beach is a playground for body-builders, rollerbladers and Baywatch-fit beauties. A must if you’re in Santa Monica, after a cocktail at the Viceroy, saunter along the Ocean Front Walk and the Promenade to the fairground on Santa Monica Pier.
If it’s surfing you’re in the mood for, Malibu is always a winner, while south of LAX, Manhattan Beach is brimming with beautiful people and big sunglasses – to be quintessentially Californian, use the cycle path to get there. Zuma, north of Malibu is a great locals’ beach (Top tip: take a picnic as the food on offer otherwise is nothing-special burger and fries.)
But for LA’s most romantic beach, El Matador wins our heart, about 10 miles north of Malibu, with its rocky shores and hidden coves.

URBAN BEACH 2

02 – Paris, FRANCE

For the past few summers, the banks of the Seine in the French capital have been transformed into a beach – Paris Plage. Dance lessons, climbing walls, games, and swimming (in floating pools, not the Seine, thankfully) are there for the active, or if you prefer, just collapse on a beach chair under a parasol. Pack your bikini by all means – but remember, this is Paris, so make sure your swimwear is couture.

URBAN BEACH 1

01 – Rio, BRAZIL

No other city can match Rio’s jaw-droppingly dramatic landscape, framed by long golden beaches. Ipanema is where the beautiful people come to pose and party, and the most desirable section where the smart local set hangs out is Posto 9, off Rua Vinicius de Moraes. Try the cheese on sticks (such as halloumi – low-fat and friendlier to bikini-conscious bodies) roasted in a mini brazier and rolled in herbs. Wash it down with a crushed ice acai drink or lethal Caipirinha Maracuja (passion fruit).
If guys are brave enough to ditch the baggy boardshorts (too touristy) and wear a ’sunga’ (Brazilian tight lycra swimshorts) there’s a great stall on the beach at Poste 8 (the gay area). Swimming can be dangerous (Ipanema means something along the lines of ‘dangerous currents’) so it can be difficult to get back to shore if you swim out beyond the breaking waves.
Top tip: if this happens to you on a busy weekend, swim over to other people in same situation and wait for helicopter rescue – the rescue service drops a net into the ocean that scoops people up and deposits them rather ungraciously on shore. For less risky fitness thrills, go for a jog along the pavement of neighbouring Leblon and bump barely-there bikinis with a very honed, toned and tanned array of body-conscious sunseekers. (It gets more family orientated around there, towards Poste 10).
And while Copacabana, which is only a hop and skip up the coast, may have once been worth singing about, today it is too touristy – try and avoid. (There tend to be more unsavoury characters hanging about here waiting for people to go in the sea and then rob their possessions too – this happens less on Ipanema as it’s so wide and full of friendly eagle eyed locals.)
If you really want to make the most of the coast, hire a bicycle and do a beach crawl. Sundays are especially good for this as cars are banned during the day on the Ipanema beach road.

NIGHT CLUBS

NIGHT CLUB SUGGESTIONS

For those who are tired of the nightclubs in their city, this version of international discos and clubs is a reliable one! However, you have to pay attention to prices, as they can be much higher than prices in your native town! For those who are not bothered by high prices, here is a top 10 list of the hottest nightclubs in the world:
Life's a party, and website Askmen.com has come up with a list of the top 10 nightclubs around the world to drink and dance the night away.

1. The Boom Boom Room, New York City
Sitting atop the brand new Standard Hotel in New York City's Meat Packing District, The Boom Boom Room opened in September 2009 and was instantly a favorite with models, designers, and celebrities.
2. LIV at the Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami
Set inside the Fontainebleau Hotel in Miami Beach, LIV is 30,000 square feet fusing a luxurious lounge with a high-energy dance club. LIV is rumored to be the highest-grossing club in the world, and not because it is big, but because people spend big.
3. Merah, London
Opened in October 2009, Merah is becoming one of London's hottest clubs. The tone for Merah is decadence with limousine service for those who purchase tables, door pickers straight from the St. Tropez hot spot Les Caves du Roys, and what is touted as the best-looking patrons in town. Merah operates on a membership basis, but the public may enter for a fee.
4. Playhouse, Los Angeles
L.A. has so many clubs that when a new one opens, there is little fanfare -- unless, of course, you are talking about Playhouse. Playhouse has quickly become an uber-hotspot for celebrities and trustafarians alike. The club provides dozens of nooks and crannies where VIPs can drink in privacy but it's only open three days a week -- Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
5. Collage, Stockholm
Collage is this Stockholm's greatest entrant into luxury dining and partying of the past 10 years. A luxury club sitting atop a five-star restaurant in the heart of downtown Stockholm, the club boasts two independent DJ booths, which at times play with each other, other times battle and can set totally different moods for their section of the dance floor. Collage's biggest claim to fame is its amazing outdoor garden.
6. Razzmattazz, Barcelona
Located in the heart of one of Europe's greatest cities, Razzmattazz is a true mega-club with five different rooms playing five types of music.
7. Wall at the W Hotel, Miami
Wall at the W in South Beach brought together a few legendary Miami club owners and set out to build the hottest dance club on the strip. Don't expect to get in there cheap though, the emphasis is placed squarely on the table-holders.
8. Guzel, Athens
Guzel is a massively chic club with a massively chic door policy, so only the pretty ones are allowed in to their now epic Sunday night hip-hop parties.
9. Juliet Supper Club, New York City
Juliet Supper Club opened in October 2009 with the help of super-chef Todd English and the minds behind two of New York City's hottest clubs of the last decade, Lotus and Greenhouse. It is located behind a black door on a barren stretch of West 21st street in Chelsea.
10. Rex Club, Paris
Rex Club was the first mega dance club in France to bring in major techno and electronica DJs. Now approaching its 20th year, Rex Club has one of the most impressive lineups of acts coming through its doors for the next 12 months anywhere in the world.

Worth getting out of bed for Wriggle your toes into the 2km-long crescent of pale sand at Pantai Cenang beach, a five-minute stroll away (although there’s a huge lounger-flanked pool to flop by at Bon Ton if walking’s a bit of a strain). Splash out and charter Kanangra, Bon Ton’s beautiful 60-foot vintage motor cruiser, for a private trip around Langkawi’s 100-odd islets.
The bottom line RM490–RM1,160 a night (about £75–£180), depending on size of house. Rates include Continental breakfast.

HONEYMOON 4

Honeymoon in Italy – Rome boutique hotel - Residenza Napoleone III bedroom

04 Residenza
Napoleone III

ROME, ITALY
Style Super-luxe palazzo
Setting Fashionable Via Condotti
Why you’ll love it You’ll feel like royalty: Residenza Napoleone III is an ultra-romantic, positively aristocratic apartment, housed in a historic wing of the Palazzo Ruspoli. Fine art and oil paintings are clearly ten-a-penny in this palatial accommodation: one’s used as a bedhead; another conceals the door to the bathroom.
True romance Pay homage to the original romantics at the Keats-Shelley House (+39 06 678 4235), a tiny, enchanting museum on the Spanish Steps.
Worth getting out of bed for Go for a walk – romantic Rome is the world’s greatest outdoor museum, where every Baroque building, classical column and rococo statue is a top-notch exhibit. Stroll along to the Trevi Fountain and throw in three coins to guarantee many happy returns.
The bottom line €730–€1,400 a night, including breakfast and taxes.

HONEYMOON 3

Honeymoon in Bhutan – Himalayas boutique hotel – Amankora

03 Amankora

KINGDOM OF BHUTAN
Style Himalayan pilgrimage
Setting Cloud-capped mountains
Why you’ll love it The kind of once-in-a-lifetime journey you’ve dreamed of, Amankora is to honeymooners what ‘progressive dining’ is to gourmets. You’ll stay in a series of five luxury lodges, each in a naturally dramatic setting, following a circular route through blue pine forests and verdant valleys (you can of course just stay in one or two, if you prefer).
True romance The landlocked Kingdom of Bhutan is barely touched by tourism – it’s one of the planet’s least visited, most exclusive travel destinations, with spectacular, spirit-soothing mountain landscapes wreathed in mist.
Worth getting out of bed for From Amankora Thimpu, it’s a short journey to Bhutan’s capital. If sightseeing isn’t your thing, there are spa rituals in spades on offer at each of the lodges, as well as yoga and meditation.
The bottom line From $1,050 a night, including all meals and drinks.

HONEYMOON 2

Honeymoon in France – Beaujolais boutique hotel - Château de Bagnols room

02 Château de Bagnols

BEAUJOLAIS, FRANCE
Style
Five-star castle
Setting Fairy-tale gardens
Why you’ll love it The original ‘happily ever after’ must surely have been conceived in a setting like this. Anyone with even the tiniest scrap of romantic sensibility will be bowled over by Château de Bagnols – it’s a dream honeymoon destination with bona fide castle credentials, not to mention a Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant.
True romance Previously a chapel, Room 8 has 18th-century frescoes and a gilded four-poster bed; newlywed Mrs Smiths will enjoy behaving like Madame de Pompadour in Room 6’s primrose-yellow damask canopy bed.
Worth getting out of bed for Arrange a wine-tasting session in the Château’s splendid Cuvage, then spend the rest of the afternoon wandering the castle’s cherry orchards and yew-tree avenues.
The bottom line €445–€915 a night; Lady Hamlyn Apartment, €2,500. Breakfast, from €32.

HONEYMOON 1

Honeymoon in Belize – Belize beach holiday - Cayo Espanto boutique hotel
01 Cayo Espanto
BELIZE, CENTRAL AMERICA
Style Private-island beach houses
Setting Caribbean coast of Ambergris Caye
Why you’ll love it Desert-island castaway fantasy meets hedonistic escapism – for barefoot luxury an exclusive island, Cayo Espanto off Belize is pretty hard to beat. Let’s face it, being marooned on a tiny patch of palm-clad land in the Caribbean wouldn’t be half as much fun without private plunge pools, a personal chef, Cognac on tap and masseurs on call.
True romance The island’s so small it’s virtually all beach, surrounded by clear, languid waters and fringed with lush foliage. Cayo Espanto has only six villas, so it’s perfect for canoodling couples and get-away-from-it-all escapism. But if that’s still not secluded enough, book the stilted Casa Ventana, located at the end of a private jetty jutting out from the island and surrounded by water.
Worth getting out of bed for Midnight swims, snorkelling at dawn, and doing next to nothing on the beach all afternoon. Hop over to neighbouring Ambergris Caye if you fancy a (relatively) lively night out, or scuba dive the spectacular Blue Hole.
The bottom line $995–$2,249 a villa a night, including all meals, snacks and drinks (except champagne, wine and spirits); excludes 9 per cent tax and a 15 per cent resort fee.
